My Selection for Waiting on Wednesday: The Diviners by Libba Bray

Book One
Waiting on Wednesday is the great meme that gives you an opportunity to learn what new books are coming out and what folks are looking forward to. It was started by Jill over at Breaking the Spine. This week, I've chosen The Diviners by Libba Bray. Check out the description...

It's 1920s New York City. It's flappers and Follies, jazz and gin. It's after the war but before the depression. And for certain group of bright young things it's the opportunity to party like never before. For Evie O'Neill, it's escape. She's never fit in in small town Ohio and when she causes yet another scandal, she's shipped off to stay with an uncle in the big city. But far from being exile, this is exactly what she's always wanted: the chance to show how thoroughly modern and incredibly daring she can be. But New York City isn't about just jazz babies and follies girls. It has a darker side. Young women are being murdered across the city. And these aren't crimes of passion. They're gruesome. They're planned. They bear a strange resemblance to an obscure group of tarot cards. And the New York City police can't solve them alone. Evie wasn't just escaping the stifling life of Ohio, she was running from the knowledge of what she could do. She has a secret. A mysterious power that could help catch the killer - if he doesn't catch her first.

I've been looking forward to this book since I read about Bray getting the book deal a couple of years ago. If I remember correctly, she was paid about a million dollars for it. I want to see what kind of story generated this big pay day! I recall the write-up at the time saying there were serial killers and demons in the story. Bray's literary agent is her husband, Barry Goldblatt. Looks like his got his wife's best interest at heart...lol...

If I weren't familiar with the author or the story premise, I would not be drawn to this book if I had to go by this cover. I don't care for it at all. Maybe they'll change it by publication day. I know you can't judge a book by it's cover, but a great one certainly adds to the reading experience!

The Diviners is supposed to be released September 2012 by Little, Brown and Company.

Toodles!

  1. I agree about the cover. I haven't heard about the book or the author before, and the cover isn't interesting me! The summary, however, is, as well as that nice advance pay!

  2. Mystery - intrigue - suspense – this story has the right ingredients for a great story! Love the subtle supernatural touch in the summary.

  3. You would think having paid 1 mill for this deal they'd work harder at making it appealing! I read her first trilogy, but didn't really enjoy it all that much.

  4. I haven't read anything by Libba Bray, but this might be my first. I love the 1920s lately...I don't know what it is, exactly, but since we're not that far from the "hundred year" mark, that might explain some of the fascination. Plus...the apparently carefree times (before the depression) sound appealing too. A serial killer? Yes!

  5. I'm not completely sure yet if I want to read this book. I loved Libba Bray's Gemma Doyle series but this new one doesn't sound as appealing to me.
