In My Mailbox...

In My Mailbox was started by Kristi, The Story Siren. It's another way I learn about new books coming out. This past week, I got even more books to add to my overflowing TBR pile.

I bought The Maze Runner. I already had the second book in the series, The Scorch Trial, which I bought in a a fire-sale when Borders was closing. Now that I have book one, I can finally start reading this story.

I love the cover of The Book of Summers by Emylia Hall. Thanks to the publisher, Mira for sending it to me. It follows a 9 year-old girl to the age of 16, as she spends summers between her mom who lives overseas and her dad in America. A life-shattering secret emerges and a betrayal ensues. Sounds good. It releases May 29.

Thanks to St. Martins's Griffin for sending the third installment of The Chronicles of Nick series, Infamous by Sherrilyn Kenyon. The first book in the series, Infinity, was zombie heavy, and I'm not a zombie-loving sort of girl, but I was surprised to really enjoyed the story and I find myself reading book 3. I'm kind of committed to Nick's journey now. I think there's like 12 books or something in the series, so I'll see how far I make it...lol...I've never read anything by Jackson Pearce, but Purity sounds like a heart-felt book: a dying mom and a promise; looking for a loophole to lose one's virginity...sounds complex--and it's not a very long book--only 224 pages. My thanks to Little, Brown for their generosity. Purity releases April 24.

Entangled Publishing sent Pretty Amy. It releases May 8. I've started reading it and I'm liking it! The author captures the teen voice and angst, being pissed at parents, perfectly!

And lastly, I received a discount coupon from Barnes and Noble. I headed over there and was met at the door with a table loaded with the Shades of Gray trilogy. I couldn't resist and had to buy it. I have to see what all the fuss is about. I'll save this for one of my summer reads.

What are you reading?

In My Mailbox...

I got a few interesting books in the mail this week. Honestly, I've got a huge stack of books waiting to be read and that doesn't include those on my Nook! I wish I could take a leave of absence from work just to get the pile cut down to size. Oh, the joy that would bring...lol...Anyway this is the interesting reads that publishers and an author sent my way...

Little, Brown was gracious enough to send me the paperback edition of The Mockingbirds by Daisy Whitney. I read this as an ARC and it is quite good. It's inspired by the author's real life experience with rape when she was in college. The Rivals is the hardcover sequel. It's not a sequel in the usual sense of the word because the first book had a firm conclusion. I would call it more of a companion novel. It continues the saga of the main character, Alex Patrick as she pursues further adventures and the pursuit of justice on behalf of other students. Can't wait to get to it.

Harper Teen sent Until I Die, the second book in the Die for Me trilogy. For those not familiar, these books have been called Twilight in Paris--with zombies! But they're not the disgusting, flesh-falling-off-the-bone zombies. They're called revenants and they're hot and sexy! Definitely looking forward to continuing this saga.

Sourcebooks Fire sent me Embrace. They sent two ARCs, so I'll definitely be giving one away. This is an angel story and I'll be honest, when I read that the premise of a book is about angels, I'm a little skeptical. There have just been so many of these books written, I've become a bit weary--but I read them anyway! Lol...I'm hearing good things about this one and the editor wrote such an enthusiastic note-to-the-reader, it really has me anticipating getting into this story. She even said she missed her train stop reading the manuscript, so I can't wait to see if it lives up to the hype! I sure hope so.

I even received a non-fiction political science book called Blacklash by Deneen Borelli. I've heard the author speak on news shows and read her thoughts in newspaper articles. I'm interested in her views as a black conservative who is clearly not a fan of President Obama.

And the cutest of the books is this picture book called The Yippy, Yappy Yorkie in the Green Doggy Sweater by Debbie Macomber and Mary Lou Carney. I didn't even know Macomber wrote children's books, but the inside flap said this is her second picture book collaboration with Carney. Who know?! Macomber even sent along a signed card with a bible verse written on it. Sweet.

So, what came your way to read this week?

In My Mailbox...

Stash from EgmontUSA
I was fortunate to receive some cool books over the last couple of weeks. I was really surprised to get a nice sized package from EgmontUSA. It included Savage Grace by Bree Despain, the last book in the Dark Divine series. I'm looking forward to finishing this trilogy. The second book left off at a big cliffhanger and I can't wait to see how it all ends.

I read the e-galley of Wither and loved it. I'm very happy to have a physical copy of Fever, book two in the series. I'm almost finished reading it and...what can I say, it's a great read: somber, dark and intriguing. I've just peeked at the pages of Cinder. It looks good and I'm fascinated by the cover.

I read The Kneebone Boy by Ellen Potter a couple of years ago, and if you haven't read it, you need to! It was cover love that drew me in. She was so sweet and kind to send me a signed copy of the hardcover edition. I'm happy to receive an Arc of her next book The Humming Room. I'm not a usual reader of middle grade novels, but if Ellen has written it, I'm in! When I read Insatiable, it was the first book I'd ever read by Meg Cabot. I thought it was YA, but it's an adult book. She jumped on the vampire wagon and did a good job of it, I'd say. Overbite is the sequel and I was stoked to get it. It wasn't clear that there was going to be a follow up book, but I'm sure glad there is.

I went to a writer's conference a couple of weeks ago, and Cassandra Clare was one of the speakers. She talked about what else? The ubiquitous love triangle in YA and how to do it right. She's pretty quirky and a little on the kinky side...lol...I've never read her books, but they've been on my TBR list, so I figured this was as good a time as any to pick them up. I spent money on these and purchased the first trilogy she wrote to get me started.

What did you receive this week?

In My Mailbox...

Original Cover
New Cover
I had some interesting finds in my mailbox this week. I requested an ARC of Wolfsbane, the second book in the Nightshade trilogy. It released in August and I never received it. Imagine my surprise when I found it in my mailbox this week! I'm especially happy because the publisher sent the one with the original cover. I am quite fond of the original covers of this series. It's been changed, now and I just don't find the new covers as intriguing. The story is awesome and I can't wait to read book two!

I was also surprised to get Hunted, the new book by Cheryl Rainsfield. I interviewed her last year (see 3/31/10 post) when her contemporary YA, SCARS released. It's inspired by her own struggles with sexual abuse and became an award-winning novel. I can't wait to see how she's going to handle the paranormal in this one!

Carry the One is getting some interesting buzz. A young girl is killed and it affects the lives of a number of people for years to come.

And finally, I received my own copies of The Woman in Black and The Killer of Little Shepherds. I just concluded my biggest giveaway this past week and had 10 winners, for these two books. The Woman in Black will be a movie starring Daniel Radcliffe. It releases February 2012 and I'm telling you, it looks seriously scary! Again, I thank Random House for their generosity.

That's it for me. What good books did you get or read this past week?

In MY Mailbox...

In MY Mailbox was started by Kriti over at The Story Siren.  I was happy to receive some books that I was given and that I bought this week. I contacted the publisher Little Brown to inquire about receiving the awesome debut, Daughter of Smoke and Bone. They were gracious enough to send me a copy.  They were kind enough to send me a couple more books this week, hardcover copies of Bunheads by Sophie Flack and How to Save a Life by Sara Zarr.  Bunheads is Flack's first novel. She was a professional ballet dancer for a company in NY, so she's writing the story from an experts opinion. I can't wait to dig into it.  I'm a huge fan of Sara Zarr. I mean, seriously. I just collect her books, even if I don't have time to read them right away. I put them on the shelf and know that I will get to them. They're like fine wine. Never trendy, just excellent true-to-life stories.

I received an ARC of  Everneath by Brodi Ashton. I love these kind of dark, edgy stories. This is also the author's first book. In addition to these freebies, I spent some money and purchased Kate Morton's Distant Hours. I already had her book, The Forgotten Garden. I haven't read either of these yet, but I'm totally captivated by the covers! I've leafed through them and the descriptions of the stories and the writing is so lush and atmospheric. She's written a third book and I plan to get that one too. The Morton books are also like vintage wine that sits patiently, waiting for you to partake of their loveliness...
Until the next time...

In MY Mailbox...Publishers have been good to me. I thank them.

It's been a while since I've participated in an IMM meme. I've received some books that I wanted to read so badly, I had to acknowledge them. What surprised me is that some publishers sent me ARCs of the books, then followed up with the hardcover edition. That was very kind and generous of them. I'm certainly going to share the blessing and have a giveaway of either the ARC or hardcover edition of each of these books.
Arcs & Hardcovers

Dystopian Novels

I loved Daughter of Smoke & Bone so much, I had to buy the author's other books! I'm waiting for one more to arrive.

My friend, Jeff published his debut YA novel!

I left this ARC behind in another state by mistake, but it was sent to me! It was just as beautiful in person. A book can be "in person", right...lol...

In MY Mailbox...and beyond...I'm drowning in a Sea of Books!!

YA ARCs
This is the first time I'm joining the official IMM meme started by Kristi at The Story Siren. I tell you. I have never had so many books come my way in such a short space of time, ever. I plan to read all of them...eventually. Not everything came in the mail though. There's a Borders not too far from my job that's closing and I was able to pick up some great books at an even better price. I had two gift cards worth $100.00. Some of you may recall that I got one of them when I won second place in a writer's contest last Spring. The other, I won from an author and fellow blogger. I'm glad I waited to use them. I certainly got more bang for the buck with the Borders closing, though I hate to make out like a bandit this way *sigh*.

I've been happily inundated with ARCs. Some are YA and some adult. I'm going to read the YA's first and then make my way through the adult ones...at least I'm going to try to. I may just have to give up and have some giveaways, but my loss will certainly be your gain. Stay tuned. I'll be giving away a few books in a two day giveaway starting April 1.
Adult books(except "between shades of gray"-YA)
