In My Mailbox...

In My Mailbox was started by Kristi, The Story Siren. It's another way I learn about new books coming out. This past week, I got even more books to add to my overflowing TBR pile.

I bought The Maze Runner. I already had the second book in the series, The Scorch Trial, which I bought in a a fire-sale when Borders was closing. Now that I have book one, I can finally start reading this story.

I love the cover of The Book of Summers by Emylia Hall. Thanks to the publisher, Mira for sending it to me. It follows a 9 year-old girl to the age of 16, as she spends summers between her mom who lives overseas and her dad in America. A life-shattering secret emerges and a betrayal ensues. Sounds good. It releases May 29.

Thanks to St. Martins's Griffin for sending the third installment of The Chronicles of Nick series, Infamous by Sherrilyn Kenyon. The first book in the series, Infinity, was zombie heavy, and I'm not a zombie-loving sort of girl, but I was surprised to really enjoyed the story and I find myself reading book 3. I'm kind of committed to Nick's journey now. I think there's like 12 books or something in the series, so I'll see how far I make it...lol...I've never read anything by Jackson Pearce, but Purity sounds like a heart-felt book: a dying mom and a promise; looking for a loophole to lose one's virginity...sounds complex--and it's not a very long book--only 224 pages. My thanks to Little, Brown for their generosity. Purity releases April 24.

Entangled Publishing sent Pretty Amy. It releases May 8. I've started reading it and I'm liking it! The author captures the teen voice and angst, being pissed at parents, perfectly!

And lastly, I received a discount coupon from Barnes and Noble. I headed over there and was met at the door with a table loaded with the Shades of Gray trilogy. I couldn't resist and had to buy it. I have to see what all the fuss is about. I'll save this for one of my summer reads.

What are you reading?

Waiting on Wednesday: Infamous: Chronicles of Nick by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Book Three

Waiting on Wednesday is the terrific meme started by Jill at Breaking the Spine. It's a great way to learn about new books that are coming out.
I'm looking forward to reading Infamous, the third book in the Chronicles of Nick series. It's not just a trilogy. I think it has like ten books or something! I believe I read that on author's site. I've become kind of committed to following Nick's saga. Check out the description...

The world has fallen in love with Nick Gautier and the Dark-Hunters.
Now Nick's saga continues in the next eagerly anticipated volume...

Go to school. Get good grades. Stay out of trouble. That's the mandate for most kids. But Nick Gautier isn't the average teenager. He's a boy with a destiny not even he fully understands. And his first mandate is to stay alive while everyone, even his own father, tries to kill him.

He's learned to annihilate zombies and raise the dead, divination and clairvoyance, so why is learning to drive and keep a girlfriend so dang hard? But that isn't the primary skill he has to master. Survival is.

And in order to survive, his next lesson makes all the others pale in comparison. He is on the brink of becoming either the greatest hero mankind has ever known.

Or he'll be the one who ends the world. With enemies new and old gathering forces, he will have to call on every part of himself to fight or he'll lose everyone he cares about.

Even himself.

Enjoy the trailer...

You can read the first two chapters here.

I don't have long to wait. The book released yesterday, March 13, 2013.

The publisher, St. Martins Press is graciously offering one lucky winner a chance to receive the newly released hardcover edition of Retribution. Check out what it's about...

 Harm no human…
A hired gunslinger, William Jessup Brady lived his life with one foot in the grave. He believed that every life had a price. Until the day when he finally found a reason to live. In one single act of brutal betrayal, he lost everything, including his life. Brought back by a Greek goddess to be one of her Dark-Hunters, he gave his immortal soul for vengeance and swore he’d spend eternity protecting the humans he’d once considered prey.
Orphaned as a toddler, Abigail Yager was taken in by a family of vampires and raised on one belief—Dark-Hunters are the evil who prey on both their people and mankind, and they must all be destroyed. While protecting her adoptive race, she has spent her life eliminating the Dark-Hunters and training for the day when she meeting the man who killed her family: Jess Brady.
A gun in the hand is worth two in the holster…
Jess has been charged with finding and terminating the creature who’s assassinating Dark-Hunters. The last thing he expects to find is a human face behind the killings, but when that face bears a striking resemblance to the one who murdered him centuries ago, he knows something evil is going on. He also knows he’s not the one who killed her parents. But Abigail refuses to believe the truth and is determined to see him dead once and for all.
Brought together by an angry god and chased by ancient enemies out to kill them both, they must find a way to overcome their mutual hatred or watch as one of the darkest of powers rises and kills both the races they’ve sworn to protect.

And the Three Winners of the Fool for Books giveaway are...

Wow. Thanks to all of you for dropping by and entering the giveaway. A special thanks to those who became followers. I always appreciate that and try to keep it interesting around here. I was surprised by the number of people who haven't read any contemporary, realistic YA. A few folks even seemed confused by what that means. Let me clarify. It's simply your basic, old school teen novel that doesn't have any supernatural or fantastical elements in the story. Paranormal still seems to be getting the lion's share of readers based on this very unscientific survey...lol...well, on to the winners.

The Grand Prize: hardcover editions of the first two books in the Chronicle of Nick series,  Infinity and Invincible, goes to Carole!! (carolejm at gmail dot com).

Second prize: paperback edition of Infinity, Chronicles of Nick goes to Louisa!! (lpcoolgirl at xplornet dot com)

Third prize: hardcopy edition of the new release, Okay For Now is Sandra (baby_blackroze at yahoo dot com)

Please send me your address ladies, so I can get the books out to you. If the winners don't respond in 72 hours, new ones will be selected.

Until the next time...

Release Day! Book Review and Giveaway: Invincible: Chronicles of Nick by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Book Two
GIVEAWAY NOW CLOSED: 3/26/11

Invincible is the second installment in Kenyon’s first foray into the young adult market. It follows the first book in the series, Infinity. This series follows Nick Gautier, a fourteen year-old boy. Kenyon has written this saga with a focus on one of her adult characters as he was as a youngster. It shows how he became the entity that he is in her adult books.
In the first book, Nick found himself the target of a number of supernatural creatures, zombies being foremost among them. This time, the story isn’t zombie intensive, but unnatural creatures like shapeshifters and demons still have Nick in their sights. He harbors a dark all-encompassing power, a power that will define him as an adult, but while he is still young and immature, powerful forces are anxious to capture him and suck up that dark energy for themselves.
Invincible takes up directly where Infinity left off, on the same day as a matter of fact. As Nick tries to understand and grasp the intentions of the supernatural guardians now placed in his life, he still has to negotiate school and a single, often overprotective mom. Let’s not leave out the new principal who thinks he’s a low-down hoodlum and the coach who threatens to have him put behind bars if he doesn’t go along with his unsavory plans.
Once again, Kenyon has done a great job of capturing the voice of a teen boy. Nick’s inner monologue and dialogue exemplify a well fleshed out character with a distinctive point of view. There were a number of laugh-out-loud moments as this teenager confronts all manner of supernatural episodes as only a teen boy could— a truckload of attitude and a take-no-prisoners bravado.

She weaved in enough pertinent information and backstory from book one to give the reader a good sense of the trajectory of the story, but without impeding the tale’s forward momentum with needless detail.
Kenyon utilizes a forthright style that is brash and to the point. You won’t find any flowery writing here. Her characters don’t hold back or indulge in self-analysis. They’re not angst-ridden, but are often blunt, handling their problems by taking immediate action—very likely of the physical kind, as in a good and vigorous fight.
As in the first installment, Invincible ends on an eye-opening note that leaves the reader with a big clue and scrambling to understand what it means. That can only be solved by continuing on with book number three, which if the first two books are an indication, will be sure to please.
I'm giving away my ARC of the story. If you'd like the chance to receive it, tell me if you've read any other Kenyon book and what it's called. Of course, if you haven't read any, that's fine too, just say so. Can't get easier than that. Please don't forget your email so I can contact you if you win. If you don't leave it, you'll disqualify yourself. I don't always have the time to hunt you down! Winner will be selected randomly. That is all.
Giveaway is open to residents of the US and Canada only and ends Friday, March 25th.

Book Review and Giveaway: No Mercy--A Dark Hunter Novel by Sherrilyn Kenyon

GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED: 1/10/11

Title: No Mercy (Dark Hunter series)
Author: Sherrilyn Kenyon
Publisher: St. Martin's Press
Format: Completed hardcover
ISBN: 978-0312546564
Price: $24.99 Pages:343
Release Date: Sept 07, 2010

No Mercy is the second book I've read from the prolific author, Sherrilyn Kenyon. My first book ever was Infinity-Chronicles of Nick, Kenyon's first young adult book. When I was contacted by the publicist and offered the opportunity to read this book, I agreed immediately because I so enjoyed Infinity. Let's take a look at the blurb on the book:

Live fast, fight hard and if you have to die then take as many of your enemies with you as you can. That is the Amazon credo and it was one Samia lived and died by. Now in contemporary New Orleans, the immortal Amazon warrior is about to learn that there’s a worse evil coming to slaughter mankind than she’s ever faced before.

Shapeshifter Dev Peltier has stood guard at the front of Sanctuary for almost two hundred years and in that time, he’s seen it all. Or so he thought. Now their enemies have discovered a new source of power- one that makes a mockery of anything faced to date.

The war is on and Dev and Sam are guarding ground zero. But in order to win, they will have to break the most cardinal of all rules and pray it doesn’t unravel the universe as we know it.

No Mercy is the 19th book in the Dark Hunter series. Having never read any of the other books, I admit, I was somewhat skeptical about being able to understand and get into the story. I'm pleased to report, I couldn't have been more wrong! As an aspiring author, I often hear that a writer should use a prologue very sparingly if at all. Kenyon is obviously a pro. She utilized a prologue and it was perfect. It set the foundation of the story and brought a new reader such as myself into the world of the Dark Hunters.

My Selection for Waiting on Wednesday: Invincible-Chronicles of Nick by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Book Two
Howdy folks. Hope you're having a happy holiday season. For those of you who are not too busy, it's time to check in and see what's good to read. Waiting on Wednesday is the terrific meme started by Jill over at Breaking the Spine. It's a great opportunity to learn what are the new books coming out that folks are dying to sink their teeth into. This week, I'm interested in Invincible by Sherrilyn Kenyon.

Book One
Invincible is the second book in the Chronicles of Nick series. The first book in the saga, Infinity is the first young adult book by Kenyon and the first time I've ever read a book by the author. I was totally intrigued by the cover and had to read it. Infinity was fairly heavily laden with zombies. I'm not a zombie fan, but they were pretty entertaining and I laughed more than a few times at their antics and the way they were dealt with (see review post 5/24/10). Zombies were only one of the paranormal creatures and the story is pretty engrossing. The series is a kind of prequel of sorts. It tells the tale of the origins of one of Kenyon's significant characters in her other books' (Am I making sense? Lol...).

Let's read Amazon's description of Invincible to see what poor Nick is up against now:

Nick Gautier’s day just keeps getting better and better. Yeah, he survived the zombie attacks, only to wake up and find himself enslaved to a world of shapeshifters and demons out to claim his soul.

His new principal thinks he’s even more of a hoodlum than the last one, his coach is trying to recruit him to things he can’t even mention and the girl he’s not seeing, but is, has secrets that terrify him.

But more than that, he’s being groomed by the darkest of powers and if he doesn’t learn how to raise the dead by the end of the week, he will become one of them...

I'm reading Kenyon's latest adult release right now, No Mercy, which I'll be reviewing and having a giveaway on shortly. Nick makes an appearance in that novel and it wet my appetite to continue his story; plus the first Chronicles of Nick book ended on a juicy cliffhanger. Gotta know what happens next!
Anyone coming along for the ride?

Invincible releases March 24, 2011.

Release Day! INFINITY-CHRONICLES of NICK by NYT Bestselling author, Sherrilyn Kenyon. Book Review and Giveaway.

Title: Infinity-Chronicles of Nick
Author: Sherrilyn Kenyon
Publisher: Griffin/St. Martins Press
Format: ARC
ISBN: 978-0-312-59907-2
Price: $17.99  Pages: 464
Release Date: May 25, 2010

Sherrilyn Kenyon is a prolific writer of a number of paranormal series. Infinity: Chronicles of Nick, a teen novel, is the first in a series for young adults. It is a prequel of sorts, telling the tale of one of her adult characters from his earlier, formative years.

Nick Gautier is a fourteen year-old boy from a single-parent home and the wrong side of the tracks. His classmates at the private school he attends on scholarship never let him forget it, either. Each day is a struggle to find acceptance from his peers, seek understanding from his mother, and keep himself on track so he doesn’t let her down. Nick always knew his father, incarcerated, was a monster and a threat. He just didn’t know he should take it literally.

One fateful night, Nick turns back from joining his so-called friends in a scheme to make a few extra dollars the wrong way. It’s cataclysmic and the beginning of a new era in Nick’s life. If he thought he had it rough before, he hasn’t seen anything yet. He’s about to learn that a lot of creatures exist beyond what mortal man can see or believe and they’re all after him. He just doesn’t understand why. Life’s about to get a whole lot better and a whole lot worse.
