My Selection for Waiting on Wednesday: Surrender by Lee Nichols

It's been a while since I participated in WoW. Life gets in the way...lol...But I'm back! At least this week...hee hee hee. Waiting on Wednesday was started by Jill at Breaking the Spine. I've learned about so many books, this way. This week, I'm looking forward to finishing the last book of a series I've been reading. Surrender is the last book of a YA paranormal trilogy. Read the final description...

After a devastating battle at headquarters in New York, the ghostkeeping world is in shambles. When Emma and Bennett return home, they are determined to defeat the wraithmaster, Neos, forever. But it's not going to be easy. Bennett's parents kick him out when they realize he is still using drugs to enhance his powers. Emma is convinced her aunt has come back from the dead to warn her of a new threat. And worst of all, Neos is using wraiths to possess the students at Thatcher Academy. If the ghosts manage to take over the entire school, even Emma won't be strong enough to stop them. But if either she or Bennett sacrifice his or her powers, they might be able to save the ghostkeeping world once and for all-and break the "ghostkeepers lose their powers when they fall in love" curse. The question is: who will be the one to surrender all power?

Fast-paced and romantic, this conclusion to the Haunting Emma trilogy will thrill readers as it brings the ghostly mystery to a close.

The romantic element was weaker in the second book. If you visit here with any regularity, you know I am all about the romance. I'm hoping it comes back in a big way in this final book in the series. We'll see...

Anyone else reading this series?

Release Day! Betrayal: A Haunting Emma Novel by Lee Nichols

Book Two
Title: Betrayal: A Haunting Emma Novel (book 2)
Author: Lee Nichols
Publisher: Bloomsbury USA Children's Books
Format: ARC
Pages: 288
Release Date: March 1, 2011

I've been waiting for this second book in the Haunting Emma series. Deception ended on a mysterious cliff hanger and I couldn't wait to see where it was going. Take a peek at the book blurb of Betrayal...

Emma Vaile is the most powerful ghostkeeper in centuries. Which is great when she's battling the wraith-master Neos, but terrible when she's flirting with fellow ghostkeeper (and soul mate) Bennett. When ghostkeepers fall in love, the weaker one loses all power, and that's not something Bennett can handle. Heartbroken and alone, Emma tries to lose herself in school with fellow ghostkeeper, Natalie. When a new team of ghostkeepers arrive - one a snarky teen boy, the other a British scholar - Emma finds solace in training for the battle against Neos. But as the team grows stronger, they are threatened by an unknown force. One they thought was good.

Book One
This is a fairly short book, but it's not short on action! There's plenty of it as Emma and her crew go on the offensive against vicious ghost-like creatures. I always thought of ghosts as lacking substance, but the ones in this story have some serious bite. They are out for the kill and one hottie has already lost his life. Betrayal is a page-turner. It's full of suspense and I was anxious to get to the bottom of what was going on. If I have any complaint, it's that this book had less romance. I've learned I'm a romance junkie! LOl...I definitely wanted to see more of the goings-on between Emma and her love interest, Bennett. They are a bit on the outs in Book 2--and for good reason, as you'll learn, but still...lol... Happily, it looks like their romance will be heating up again and I'm looking forward to it. On to book 3...!

Betrayal releases today, March 1, 2011!

My Selection for Waiting on Wednesday: Betrayal: A Haunting Emma Novel by Lee Nichols

Book Two
Another week has past and we're back again to see what everyone is dying to read. Waiting on Wednesday is the awesome meme started by Jill at Breaking the Spine that brings us all together to do just that!

I'm into ghosts this week. Now, I've never had much interest in ghost stories. When a most lovely publicist at Bloomsbury USA Children's Books, offered to send me an ARC of the first book in the series, I figured I didn't have anything to lose. I had never heard of the author and figured I'd give it a shot. Am I ever glad I did. Deception, the first book in the Haunting Emma series was awesome (see 6/10/10 post). Some of you may have read my WoW post of a couple of weeks ago where I talked about a series I want to read (The Devouring), but am kind of chicken to do so. What surprised me with Deception was how well the author, Lee Nichols wrote scary.
Book One

I wasn't expecting the level of creepiness I got in the story and I loved it. Looking at the cover, it looks more mysterious than scary, but there were genuinely scary, downright horrific moments. The ending took a surprise turn that left me definitely hungry to continue the saga. I have to know, I tell you!!

Let's look at the blurb of Betrayal right from the authors site:

Emma Vaile is the most powerful ghostkeeper in centuries. Which is great for battling the wraith-master Neos and horrible for her social life. Emma knows fellow ghostkeeper Bennett Stern is her soul mate, but when ghostkeepers fall in love, the weaker one loses all power. And until Neos is defeated, Bennett and Emma can't risk it.
When the temptation of being with Emma gets to be too much, Bennett disappears, pursuing a dangerous path to increase his powers. Heartbroken and alone, Emma tries to lose herself in school. But when the Knell, a secret ghostkeeping society, sends two new ghostkeepers to Echo Point—one a snarky teen guy, the other a British scholar—Emma throws herself into training to battle Neos. But as the team grows stronger, so do the ghosts. And worse, one of their own will betray them. One Emma never suspected. . . .

Emma certainly looks a lot more devilish and snarky than she did on the first book. I hear it's a hotter, scarier read too. I say bring it on, baby!

Anyone else started the series? Read any other good ghost stories I should know about, preferably scary...lol...
