OMG! Bryan is back and he's offering you the chance to win up to 500 dollars doing what you love!

Bryan Cohen
If you like to write stories, blog posts, and more and love to read, my guest blogger, Bryan, can help you do it all! Check out his post below, expand your learning curve and maybe put a few more bucks in your pocket. Take it away, Bryan...

Your Writing Sanctuary and/or Shack

by Bryan Cohen

I sat on the blacktop of my dorm's basketball court, surrounded by construction noise when I realized that I could write anywhere. I don't know what it was I was scrawling on a piece of looseleaf that day, as my fellow classmates looked at me like I was crazy, but the machines were doing their work and so was I. That was over a decade ago, and yet it was one of the most important lessons I ever internalized. I didn't write my first book in an office. I wrote it in other peoples' offices during temp jobs. I put together some of it in my "economy studio" in which my office was the same room as my kitchen and my bedroom. I later put the finishing touches on the book on top of a luxurious $100 table my wife and I bought from Target. My writing time was inconsistent and erratic but I got it done wherever I could.

I think some writers put too much emphasis on finding their writing sanctuary: the perfect place to make their novel or non-fiction a reality. There's some merit to locating a place where you feel less distracted and blocked. I wrote part of my first book on an inherited queen size bed I later had to toss out because of bed bugs. I wrote my latest half in my office and half in my favorite, quiet, gluten-free pastry shop. Finding the right locations for writing made an impact, but the major difference between my first and latest book is me.

I grew from writing in all those different places. I improved by putting in more time and absorbing the different energies around me as I wrote. I think I needed to write in that tiny studio with the giant window that let out nearly all of my radiator heat during the Chicago winter. I had to reinforce the knowledge that writing could take place anywhere and under any condition. I still get writers block, like any other writer, but I've learned the lesson that I can find my writing sanitary or shack anywhere. Am I out of inspiration in my office? It's time to go to the coffee shop! Coffee shop too crowded? I'll try taking a trip to the edge of Lake Michigan. Or the back seat of my wife's parked car. Or even a bench located underneath the growling Chicago Transit Authority elevated train tracks.

If you can make your hallowed writing ground anywhere, there's no such thing as writers block. The next 500 words may be right around the corner. All you need to do is move.

Cover Reveal! Pretty Amy by Lisa Burstein.

I'm pleased to reveal the cover of Pretty Amy by Lisa Burstein! It's Lisa's debut novel and it releases May 15, 2012 by Entangled Publishing.

It really is pretty isn't it? I"m having a serious case of sandal envy...lol...All shades of light blue are my favorite color, so this caught my attention immediately. My first though was: what's going on with this girl? I'm kind of fascinated. Let's see what the description has to say...

Amy is fine living in the shadows of beautiful Lila and uber-cool Cassie, because at least she’s somewhat beautiful and uber-cool by association. But when their dates stand them up for prom, and the girls take matters into their own hands—earning them a night in jail outfitted in satin, stilettos, and Spanx—Amy discovers even a prom spent in handcuffs might be better than the humiliating “rehabilitation techniques” now filling up her summer. Worse, with Lila and Cassie parentally banned, Amy feels like she has nothing—like she is nothing.

Navigating unlikely alliances with her new coworker, two very different boys, and possibly even her parents, Amy struggles to decide if it’s worth being a best friend when it makes you a public enemy. Bringing readers along on an often hilarious and heartwarming journey, Amy finds that maybe getting a life only happens once you think your life is over.

Amy Burstein at her junior prom
Lisa Burstein, the author, is a tea seller by day and a writer by night. She wrote her first story when she was in second grade. It was a Thanksgiving tale from the point of view of the turkey from freezer to oven to plate. It was scandalous.

She was a lot like Amy when she was in high school.

She is still a lot like Amy!

Sounds like trouble to me...lol...

You can be part of the fun. In the weeks leading up to Pretty Amy's release on May 15, there will be a Worst Prom Photo contest. Make sure to dust off your old prom photos—the more tulle, bows, and big hair the better!—and watch Lisa's site, http://www.lisaburstein.com, for details on how to submit/enter to win a beauty package.

In honor of Black History month, a review and signed book giveaway of Gathering of Waters by Bernice L. McFadden

Giveway has ended as of 2/26/12

I became familiar with the writing of Bernice McFadden a couple of years ago when I read her prior novels, Sugar and Glorious. The writing is outstanding and Glorious received accolades from a number of sources, including the New York Times and Oprah's magazine. I was quite intrigued when I was offered the opportunity to read her newest novel, Gathering of Waters. Check out the blurb on the cover of the book...

Gathering of Waters is a deeply engrossing tale narrated by the town of Money, Mississippi--a site both significant and infamous in our collective story as a nation. Money is personified in this haunting story, which chronicles its troubled history following the arrival of the Hilson and Bryant families.

Tass Hilson and Emmett Till were young and in love when Emmett was brutally murdered in 1955. Anxious to escape the town, Tass marries Maximillian May and relocates to Detroit.

Forty years later, after the death of her husband, Tass returns to Money and fantasy takes flesh when Emmett Till's spirit is finally released from the dank, dark waters of the Tallahatchie River. The two lovers are reunited, bringing the story to an enchanting and profound conclusion.

Gathering of Waters mines the truth about Money, Mississippi, as well as the town's families, and threads their history over decades. The bare-bones realism--both disturbing and riveting--combined with a magical realm in which ghosts have the final say, is reminiscent of Toni Morrison's Beloved.

I've never thought of myself as a connoisseur of historical fiction, but I find myself eagerly awaiting McFadden's books. Gathering of Waters was different than what I expected--in a good way. The two books of McFadden's that I read were firmly rooted in reality and totally engrossing. I wasn't sure if I could get into a story that had a magical realism thread, but the it dídn't take long to pull me in. This is an author that has a true gift for dialogue and description. As a reader, you feel that you are right there in the scene--And believe me--some of those scenes will have you covering your mouth and shaking your head!

The world of Gathering of Waters is intricate, rich and finally nuanced. It's a story that keeps you reading. You have to know how it's going to turn out. If you'd like to recieve a signed copy for yourself, just leave a comment that tells me what historical novel you've read or story the includes magical realism. If you haven't read any that's fine, just say so. Don't forget to include your email so you can be contacted. That is all.

The giveaway is open to residents of the US and Canada at publisher's request. It ends Sunday, February 26. 2012.

Tempest by Julie Cross. Is time travel the next theme in YA?

Book One
Tempest, the debut novel of Julie Cross has been getting some buzz. It's the first book in a trilogy and it plays with time--literally--as the teen main character is a time traveler of sorts. This isn't a common theme in YA...check out the description.

The year is 2009. Nineteen-year-old Jackson Meyer is a normal guy… he’s in college, has a girlfriend… and he can travel back through time. But it’s not like the movies – nothing changes in the present after his jumps, there’s no space-time continuum issues or broken flux capacitors – it’s just harmless fun. That is… until the day strangers burst in on Jackson and his girlfriend, Holly, and during a struggle with Jackson, Holly is fatally shot. In his panic, Jackson jumps back two years to 2007, but this is not like his previous time jumps. Now he’s stuck in 2007 and can’t get back to the future.

Desperate to somehow return to 2009 to save Holly but unable to return to his rightful year, Jackson settles into 2007 and learns what he can about his abilities. But it’s not long before the people who shot Holly in 2009 come looking for Jackson in the past, and these “Enemies of Time” will stop at nothing to recruit this powerful young time-traveler. Recruit… or kill him.Piecing together the clues about his father, the Enemies of Time, and himself, Jackson must decide how far he’s willing to go to save Holly… and possibly the entire world.

Book Giveaway and Author Interview: Dracula in Love by Karen Essex. Three Winners for This One!

GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED AS OF 10/12/11

Dracula in Love was published in hardcover, last summer. In honor of the new paperback edition, the author, Karen Essex, in conjunction with her publisher, are offering three winners a chance to read it. I read it last year and it's a really original take on the story. It's told from the viewpoint of Dracula's love interest, Mina Harker. Check out the blurb...

London, 1890. Mina Murray Harker, the rosy-cheeked, quintessentially pure Victorian heroine, becomes Count Dracula’s object of desire. To preserve her chastity, five male “defenders” rush in to rescue her from the vampire’s evil clutches. This is the story we have been told. But now, from Mina’s own pen, we discover a tale more sensual, more devious, and more enthralling than the Victorians could have ever imagined. From the shadowy banks of the river Thames to the wild and windswept Yorkshire coast, Mina vividly recounts the intimate details of what really transpired between her and the Count—the joys and terrors of a passionate affair, as well as her rebellion against her own frightening preternatural powers.

You can put the title in the search engine on this blog and learn more from the review I posted last September.

Book Review: A Beautiful Dark by Jocelyn Davies

A Beautiful Dark is the debut novel of Jocelyn Davies. She’s an editor of young adult fiction and decided to take the plunge into the genre herself. We all know the old saying: don’t judge a book by its cover, but the cover of this novel is truly eye-catching. It’s an enigma. Who is this girl? The background is dark and stormy; the title is evocative of an intriguing mystery. It begs for one to crack the spine and explore.
Skye, the protagonist, age seventeen is living a normal life—sort of. She’s the unrequited crush of a young man that works at the coffee shack, she’s trying to negotiate school and friends and come to terms with the loss of her parents, killed in an accident. Having Mom’s best friend as her guardian is great, but it can’t remove the pain that is always brewing beneath the surface.
Missing parents are a common device in YA fiction to allow for situations that would be a lot more difficult if not impossible if adults were present—at least if you want a credible story or the writer is utilizing irresponsible parents as a plot device. That’s not the case here. The missing parents are an integral part of the mystery. They’re part of a delicious little twist that is essentially only hinted at. I’m hoping to see it explored more thoroughly as the story continues in the next installment.
Jocelyn Davies does a nice job of worldbuilding.  It was easy to fall into that world and visualize that cold, ski-town in Colorado, the crunchy ice and the hot, steaming coffee that await the teens who meet up at the intimate shack. When two hot boys who are diametrically opposed to each other, appear in Skye’s life, things begin heat up—and it has nothing to do with that coffee!
Skye finds herself jockeying between these two strange boys.  Who are they and what do they want? They’re on a mission. Each is familiar with the other and it is clear they despise each other. Skye struggles to understand how she factors into their apparent feud. The author is to be commended for giving Devin and Asher very unique and distinctive personalities. They both had their strengths and flaws and it isn’t clear who the bad guy is or who to root for. Their emotions had depth. The attraction and repulsion they had in their connection to Skye was nicely nuanced.
The ending is a total shock and a huge cliffhanger. This is no stand-alone novel. One must read the next book in the series to get to the bottom of things and I look forward to digging in and finding out!

A New Dystopian Novel for Your Pleasure: All These Things I've Done by Gabrielle Zavin: A Book Giveaway

All These Things I've Done is an interesting mix of dystopian and romance set in the future that was just released. Check out the finer details as to what it's about...

In 2083, chocolate and coffee are illegal, paper is hard to find, water is carefully rationed, and New York City is rife with crime and poverty. And yet, for Anya Balanchine, the sixteen-year-old daughter of the city's most notorious (and dead) crime boss, life is fairly routine. It consists of going to school, taking care of her siblings and her dying grandmother, trying to avoid falling in love with the new assistant D.A.'s son, and avoiding her loser ex-boyfriend. That is until her ex is accidently poisoned by the chocolate her family manufactures and the police think she's to blame. Suddenly, Anya finds herself thrust unwillingly into the spotlight--at school, in the news, and most importantly, within her mafia family.

The publisher is giving away a copy to one lucky winner. To have a chance to receive it,  answer this: name something you love so much, it should be declared illegal. Don't forget to include your email. That is all.

Book Review and Giveaway: Dracula in Love: Two Winners for this one!

Title: Dracula in Love
Author: Karen Essex
Publisher: Doubleday
Format: Finished Book
ISBN: 978-0385528914
Price: $25.95; Pages: 370
Release Date: August 10, 2010

I have a faint remembrance of reading the original Dracula many years ago. I recall it's told from the perspective of the men in the story, particularly Jonathan Harker, whose fiancee Mina Murray, was the object of Dracula's desire...or something along those lines. In Dracula in Love, Karen Essex takes the story in a new direction. She tells this old classic from the female point of view. It is written in first person from the perspective of Mina. Let's take a look at the blurb on the book.

Reader, you are about to enter a world that exists simultaneous with your own. But be warned: in its realm, there are no rules, and there is certainly no neat formula to become--or to destroy--one who has risen above the human condition...The truth is, we must fear monsters less and be warier of our own kind. (from the books prologue)

London, 1890. Mina Murray, the rosy-cheeked, quintessentially pure Victorian heroine, becomes Count Dracula's object of desire. To preserve her chastity, five male "defenders" rush in to rescue her from the vampire's evil clutches. This is the story we've been told. But now, from Mina's own pen, we discover that the story is vastly different when told from the female point of view...

Book Review and Giveaway: The Eternal Ones by Kirsten Miller: One Lucky Winner For This One!

Title: The Eternal Ones
Author: Kirsten Miller
Publisher: Razorbill (Penguin)
Genre: Young Adult
Format: Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) from Publisher
ISBN 978-1-59514-308-2
$17.99, 416 pages
Release Date: August 10, 2010

This is a bit of a re-cap. I reviewed this book in the winter, long before it was released. Now that's it's in the stores, I want to remind you about it again. I received this ARC from Ben Schrank, president and publisher of Razorbill, an imprint of Penguin during the Winter Conference of the Society of Children's Book Writer's and Illustrators (SCBWI) in New York. He was gracious enough to make a few available and I am grateful that he did.

Prior to receiving this ARC, I was unfamiliar with the author, Kirsten Miller. I am now aware that she has written a critically-acclaimed series called Kiki Strike. I believe THE ETERNAL ONES is going to be her break out novel.

Wow. Where do I begin. This book is chocked full of so many delicious twists and turns, it will keep you riveted to your seat, and quickly turning the page to get to the bottom of all that is going on. Let me begin with the blurb on the back.

Haven Moore has always lived in the tiny town of Snope City, Tennesse. But for as long as she can remember, Haven has experienced visions of a past life as a girl named Constance, whose love for a boy called Ethan ended in a fiery tragedy.

One day, the sight of notorious playboy Iain Morrow on television brings Haven to her knees. Haven flees to New York City to find Iain and there, she is swept up in an epic love affair that feels both deeply fated and terribly dangerous. Is Iain her beloved Ethan? Haven asks members of the powerful and mysterious Ouroboros Society to help her unlock the mysteries of reincarnation and discover the secrets hidden in her past lives and loves before all is lost and the cycle begins again. But what is the Ouroboros Society? And how can Haven know who to trust?

My Selection for Waiting on Wednesday: Rich and Mad by William Nicholson

This is my second time following this meme and I love it. Jill at Breaking the Spine started it and it gives me a great opportunity to highlight and indulge my love of scintillating stories. The book I can't wait to dig into is called Rich and Mad by William Nicholson, an Academy Award Nominated screenwriter and award-winning fantasy author and playwright. Rich and Mad is his first YA novel.

Rich is the boy and Mad (Maddie) is the girl.  I think the statement on the book's cover, says it all:

First love. First Sex. And everything in between.

I think that about covers it...lol...Sounds like a good read to me. I've heard it gets pretty graphic in it's depiction of sex and there's a violent sub plot. I'm up for it. I can take it. What about you? Rich and Mad was released in England in April and releases in the US in September. An editor from Egmont, that is publishing the book, told me it's awesome. I intend to call her bluff and read it to find out! You should probably be brave and do the same.

And the Winner of I Am Number Four is...

This is such a good book, I'm sure the winner is going to enjoy it. Based on the comments, not many people have read anything with aliens in it, so my assumption about that is right. One person did mention The Host by Stephanie Myers. Umm...I forgot about that one. I'll have to check it out. Haven't heard much about it. I picked it up in the store and the first line didn't pull me in. I think it was a type of alien language of some sort...lol...but the premise sounds great, so I know I'll be reading it at some point.

Anyhoo, let's move on to the best part--the winner. And the winner of  I Am Number Four, a very intriguing book is...

Release Date: 8/3/10

I Am Number Four is the first young adult novel from the infamous, best selling author James Frey and the debut novel of his co-author, Columbia MFA graduate, Jobie Hughs.  They have chosen to write under the pseudonym Pittacus Lore, a character from the book and one of its narrative voices.

The novel takes the paranormal phenomenon in YA literature in a fresh direction exploring aliens. I Am Number Four is the first of a six-book series that tells the tale of nine children from the planet Lorien. Their home planet has been invaded and destroyed by a hostile race called the Mogadorian. The “Lorien Nine” and their guardians are the sole survivors of the vicious war. They have settled on Earth to await the time they are ready to fight the enemy, avenge their people, and reclaim and rebuild their planet.

The Nine are protected by a charm specifying that they can only be killed by their enemies in numeric order. Three of the nine have been located and killed. The narrator of the story, John Smith, is number four—and time is running out.  John and his guardian have stayed on the move to evade capture for the past ten years they’ve lived on Earth. They settle in Paradise, Ohio. Fifteen-year-old John has finally made a friend—his first—and a girlfriend as well. It’s going to make a sudden move a whole lot harder now—not to mention the fatal consequences looming.
